SA, Melrose, Melrose Caravan Park

Date of Stay: November 2016 Rating: 3.5
The Melrose Caravan Park in South Australia is located at the foot of Mount Remarkable in the small township of Melrose. This park offers a unique camping experience with ready access to the bush and creek environment which abuts the park as does a network of bicycle and walking trails – our observations suggest that the park is very popular with families. From here, there is ready access to national parks, gorges and historic towns. We booked in recently for two nights but had to leave after one night to return home. However, we saw enough to appreciate that this is a relaxing bush park with plenty of opportunity to explore the local area. The caravan / camping sites offer grass or gravel pads. Shower and toilet blocks are large, relatively modern and well maintained. Optus mobile / Wi-Fi available. The town offers basic supplies with groceries available at a local general store. A relieving park manager was on hand when we arrived. He offered good advice re local points of interest and was most helpful.

SA, Hawker, Hawker Caravan Park

Date of Stay: November 2016 Rating: 3.5
Recently spent five nights in an ensuite site at this park with the express purpose of exploring the Flinders Ranges. Although there are other caravan parks in the region, we selected this park, knowing Optus was available for phones and Wi-Fi – communications otherwise limited throughout the region. The park is an outback park. Hence, all sites were either dirt or gravel, but very well maintained. Water is available to sites. I noted a desalination plant on the outskirts of the town so I expect that this is for the purpose of treating bore water for the town. Tank water is available throughout the park. The park is within walking distance of the township of Hawker which supplies basic needs in grocery lines. The grounds are spacious with plenty of room for large vans. There is an excellent pool within the park along with a reasonable playground for kids. Toilet and shower block is clean but aged as are the ensuites. This is a very comfortable park and we enjoyed our stay. Park managers are friendly and accommodating.

This caravan park is well located in the Southern Flinders Ranges of South Australia. It is an open park with some trees for shade and mostly gravel sites. Sites are capable of taking large vans. There are two shower/toilet blocks, one of which is modern, spacious and well maintained. I had no need to access the other building. Park is neat and tidy and is well managed. Reception friendly. Within walking distance of local shops and hotels. We enjoyed two nights. Certainly suitable for longer stays to explore the local area.

This is one of those caravan parks which will pull you back for another visit at some time in the future. It is ideally situated on the main road in the centre of town, just a few minutes’ walk from the shops. It has a park like feel about it with beautiful gardens, delightful in the spring, lawns and shady trees. Across the road is a large park playground for kids to enjoy. The park has a mix of slab, grass and gravel sites with plenty of room for large vans. Shower / toilet facilities are clean, a little aged, but adequate. The camp kitchen and BBQ area looked great from a distance. A dump site is situated on the road outside the park. We stayed for two nights but it would be very easy to stay for much longer to fully explore this region which takes in the southern end of the Flinders Ranges and mid north of South Australia. This is a well-managed park with friendly and engaging operators.
