NT, Alice Springs, MacDonnell Range Holiday Park

Date of Stay: June 2016 Rating: 3.5
All the facilities you'd expect from a Big 4. Extras include nightly talks on topics of interest (star gazing tonight). We stayed in an ensuite site which was generously sized. Not cheap, $85 for ensuite site during peak period. Only negative was the officious staff member at check in - felt like we were getting into Fort Knox. However we will stay here again.

NT, Wauchope, Devils Marbles Hotel

Date of Stay: June 2016 Rating: 3.5
Great campground a stone's throw from the Devils Marbles. Yes, it's rural but the facilities are fine, they have a lovely pool area and the food is great too. If you are looking for an alternative to the campground at Devils Marbles, definitely worth a go. Powered and unpowered sites, cabins and bunkhouse. Very friendly and helpful staff. And not expensive when you consider the location. (We paid 3 times as much in Alice Springs Big 4 the following night.) Oh, and they are pet friendly too so your canine or feline travelling companion is most welcome.

Qld, Bamaga, Punsand Bay Camping Resort

Date of Stay: September 2015 Rating: 3.5
Fabulous bush camp ground on the beach, just a stone's throw from the Tip. Perfect spot for r'n'r after tackling the Old Telegraph Track (or the bypass roads).
Very friendly staff, good staff response to complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. Good value for money $60 for 2A 2C PN, powered, peak season. Amenities are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, kiosk, book swap available, you can use your mobile wireless carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 1. Quiet, open & roomy park, adequate shade, no permanent or annual vans. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe.
Liked:- Just a wonderful location, at the top of Australia. Not a caravan park but great for tents/swags and off road camper trailers. A well made off road caravan would be fine too. Great bar and restaurant (the wood fired pizzas are legendary), movies for kids in the holidays, close to Thursday Island. Very helpful and friendly staff. In house masseuse and helicopter rides. Above ground pool for cooling off.
Disliked:- At the end of the Dry the ground is dusty and showers are hard to keep pristine, but the managers make an effort to clean them regularly. And if you are the sort of person who gets to this park, you won't be fussed by a bit of dust anyway. And I've seen muddier showers in many other campgrounds. Not an issue for us but just so people are aware.
Added Touches:- Can have campfires. Launch your tinny off the beach (but no vehicles allowed on beach). Great fishing and close to lots of 4wd adventure spots
Road Conditions:- The PDR is recommended for 4wds and is very rough and corrugated in places at the moment (end of the Dry). A 2wd could do the road if you are careful. Off road camper trailers or caravans would be fine but a standard van might get shaken to bits on the corrugations. Road conditions vary regularly and work is being done all the time to upgrade (most sections have at least some bitumen areas).

Qld, Archer River, Archer River Roadhouse

Date of Stay: September 2015 Rating: 3.5
A lovely spot to camp on your way up or down the Cape. All unpowered, no marked sites. Very roomy. A great place to throw out your swag.
Friendly staff, no complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. Good value for money $30 for 2A 2C PN, unpowered, peak season. Amenities are close to all sites, were clean, condition is good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, some unlevel sites, shade to some sites. Kiosk.
Liked:- This is an open camp ground with limited facilities. Good food at the roadhouse, which is licensed. A short walk to Archer River which even at the end of the Dry had enough water for the kids to paddle.
Road Conditions:- The PDR can be rough and corrugated. 4wd recommended but not essential. Off road vans and camper trailers fine - normal vans might get shaken to bits.

Qld, Chillagoe, Chillagoe Observatory And Eco Lodge

Date of Stay: April 2015 Rating: 3
Manager's name is Ian.
The Eco Lodge is looking a bit tired, but it is an outback location with a harsh climate. The grounds are well maintained and its a good base for exploring the caves and surrounding area. We camped so can't comment on the cabins or restaurant. Probably a bit expensive for what it offered in terms of site, but it had lots of extras - like the free movies, that made up for it.
Friendly staff, no complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. Reasonable value for money $44 for 2A 2C PN, powered, shoulder season. Amenities are close to only some sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, sites will accommodate small to medium vans, no sites with annex slabs, shade to some sites, hard to negotiate into site. Basic camp kitchen, kiosk, no wireless internet available, you can use your mobile wireless carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 4. Quiet, open & roomy park, inadequate shade, no permanent/annual vans. Clean UC gas BBQs are free, congenial bbq area atmosphere, bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No playground. Clean pool, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for few days, suitable for families, park is considered kid-safe.
Liked:- Movies for the kids on the big screen, observatory onsite (although we didn't get to use it), friendly staff, nice "bush" feel.
Disliked:- Powered site access cramped for vans, ok for camper trailers - we had to get someone to move their marquee so we could access our site. However, there was another section of the park where big vans were parked but not sure if they were powered or unpowered sites. Amenities would be inadequate for peak season. No toilet paper/hand towels most of the time we were there, as toilets were only serviced once in the morning. Above ground pool surrounds could use oiling. And if they could stop the rooster and his mate crowing at 4am please.
Parking:- Plenty of room to park outside.
Added Touches:- Movies are free. Fires allowed on site. Lots of room for the kids to run around and play/ride bikes.
Local Information:- Caves are a must-see (obviously). The pub does a great counter-lunch. BYO food as much as possible as the general store has limited variety.
Road Conditions:- Good - a little bit of dirt between Almadeen and Chillagoe but very well maintained.

Qld, Longreach, Longreach Tourist Park

Date of Stay: January 2015 Rating: 4
Friendly staff, no complaints. Good value for money $54 for 2A 2C PN, ensuite, off-peak season. Amenities are close to most sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water. Mostly level sites, good night lighting, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, annex slabs to most sites, very few sites are shaded, ensuite sites available, drive-through sites, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, good camp kitchen, no wireless internet available, you can use your mobile wireless carrier used was Telstra. Quiet, open & roomy park, inadequate shade, no permanent/annual vans. Clean UC gas BBQs are free, congenial bbq area atmosphere. Clean pool, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe, park is considered suitable for mobility impaired persons.
Liked:- We were there on Boxing Day so very quiet and lots of room. Might be different in peak season. Excellent camp kitchen (one of the best I have seen) and a great pool. The resident brolgas are a bonus.
Parking:- Plenty of parking out the front of reception.
Local Information:- Close to the Qantas museum, Stockman's Hall of Fame and not far to shops.
Road Conditions:- We drove the 4wd drive track from Pentland towing an off road van. No problems. Tarred roads to/from Winton and Blackall are fine but watch out for kangaroos.

Vic, Warragul, Warragul Gardens Caravan Park

Date of Stay: January 2015 Rating: 4.5
We stayed here for nearly a week, using Warragul as a base to travel to Melbourne, Phillip Island, and around Gippsland, both by car and by train. It is very convenient to the town - some train noise as the line is nearby but not enough to be annoying.
Friendly staff, no complaints, staff explained park layout and facilities. Good value for money $45 for 2A 2C PN, powered, peak season. Amenities are close to all sites, were clean, condition is very good, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, dry change area. Adequate number of tourist sites, mostly level sites, good night lighting, sites will accommodate large motorhomes and 5th wheelers, annex slabs to some sites, shade to most sites, adequate taps close by. Good laundry, good camp kitchen, you can use your mobile wireless carrier used was Telstra. Quiet, open & roomy park, adequate shade, many permanent/annual vans. Clean BBQs. Good playground, in average condition. Clean pool, pool is shaded, tables and chairs provided. Suitable for a week or more, suitable for families, well maintained park, park is considered kid-safe, park is considered suitable for mobility impaired persons.
Liked:- This is a beautifully maintained park. Generously proportioned sites.
Disliked:- While the sites are reasonably sized, the flip side of adequate shade means trees to negotiate when parking. This can prove challenging particularly if the neighbouring cabins have cars parked out the front.
Parking:- Adequate parking while checking in.
Added Touches:- One side of the park is retirement cottages, with vans in the middle and cabins on the other side. It has a nice feel and is beautifully landscaped. Could easily stay a week or more here. Great value for money.

Liked:- We have stayed here a few times, in cabins. This was the first time in the van. Drive through site made easy parking after a long drive. They have tennis courts (racquets for hire), jumping pillow and lots of room for kids to run around. Also a lake with ducks which the kids loved.
Local Information:- A good spot to base yourself for a trip to Canberra.
