Qld, Winton, Matilda Country Tourist Park

Date of Stay: April 2012 Rating: 2.5
Manager's name is Mick and Tammy. A dry and very dusty park at Easter time. The main toilet/laundry block was being renovated, and closed at the time of my visit. This placed a huge strain on the remaining two toilets and showers. Site cost was a bit high in my view. Their web site states $26 2A PN. The managers answer to this was, "We don't usually update the web site". Friendly staff, average staff response to complaints, staff offered tourist advice. Reasonable value for money ($30 2A PN, powered, shoulder season). Amenity number would not cope in peak times, are close to most sites, cleanliness was average, condition is reasonable, water pressure is good, there was adequate hot water, paper towels/dryer provided, mostly level sites, poor night lighting, sites will accommodate medium to large vans, no sites with annex slabs, shade to some sites, adequate taps close by, adequate sullage close by. Basic laundry, basic camp kitchen, car wash, dump point, no wireless internet available, you can use your mobile wireless (carrier used was Telstra, reception quality was 5). Quiet, open & roomy park, not enough shade, no permanents. Clean UC gas bbq (free), bbq area lighting, seating provided at bbq. No playground. Clean pool, tables and chairs provided, toddlers catered for. Suitable for few days, suitable for families.
Liked:- Quiet and somewhat peaceful park, and by booking well ahead was given a nicely shaded site.
Disliked:- Rubbish bin emptying was somewhat random. Male manager liked to water various sections, but would forget to turn sprinklers off resulting in large muddy puddles.
Parking:- Room for one or two vans at the park entry
Local Information:- Good base for attractions such as Lark Quarry Dinosaur display, Bladensburg National Park and Opalton diggings. Matilda Centre in Winton is also worth a look as is Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum
Road Conditions:- Bitumen roads from Winton to Longreach and Winton to Hughenden were both suffering from heavy vehicle damage to edges. Significant road works were in evidence on both routes. Dirt roads around Winton (eg to Lark Quarry and Opalton) were generally poor.
