QLD, Julatten, Kingfisher Park Bird Watchers Lodge

Date of Stay: August 2015 Rating: 3
Kingfisher Park is set up for bird watchers and not at all suitable for children. It is not a caravan park but has a few sites available for birders travelling in vans, campers or tents. At Kingfisher Park it's all about the birds. It is expensive at $45 a night for a powered site, however, outstanding value considering the expertise of the owners and easy access to an abundance of birds and other wildlife including platypus in the creek. Discount available for longer stays. Bookings are essential. The amenities are basic but the camp kitchen is large and has plenty of room to cook and eat.

NSW, Wollemi National Park, Dunns Swamp Ganguddy Campground

Date of Stay: March 2015 Rating: 4
Beautiful large trees and rocky outcrops make for a wonderful bush setting. Campsite are large and flat, with fire rings close by. Campground is very popular with kayakers as it is right next to a very large picturesque waterway. Friendly ranger came for a visit and a chat on Friday. Woodpile was filled on Friday afternoon and most of the firewood was gone by Saturday morning. We saw a car with a trailer fill up and drive off. Long drop toilets were nice and clean with plenty of toilet paper. Great value at $5 per person per night.

NSW, Bonny Hills, BIG4 Bonny Hills Holiday Park

Date of Stay: March 2015 Rating: 4.5
We have been visiting this park over the past few years and it gets better each time. The staff are always friendly and accommodating. We requested a drive through site and were given a huge corner site. The ensuite sites are brilliant with new large synthetic grass areas. Short walk to the beach.

Qld, Mutarnee, Crystal Creek Caravan Park

Date of Stay: August 2013 Rating: 4
This is a beautifully maintained park with the best amenities block we came across during our 3 months in Far North Queensland. When I walked into the camp kitchen I thought I had walked into the family room/ kitchen area of someone's house. We paid $28 for a powered drive through site with a slab. Each of the sites are quite private, as they are nicely screened with bushes and palms. Although it's on the highway there is very little noise down at the back of the park.

Qld, Malanda, Malanda Falls Caravan Park

Date of Stay: August 2013 Rating: 4
This is a gem of a park. Bordering a rainforest and right next door to Malanda Falls, its location is a real bonus, if you've had enough of driving and just want to relax and walk to the attractions and shops. The park is quite large with a variety of sites. Powered and unpowered sites on the large oval as well as sites with a slabs if required. The amenities were large and clean but the laundry was a long way from our site. Camp kitchen was well equipped with hot water and a 4 burner electric stove as well as a microwave. The manager Kylie is very friendly and obliging. She's very keen for you to get the most out of your holiday and happily provides advice and information. There is a little farm with all sorts of animals which is great for kids. After a lot of rain there are parts of the park which get very muddy. We paid $22 for a powered site. Best value of the trip.

Qld, Hydeaway Bay, Hydeaway Bay Caravan Park

Date of Stay: August 2013 Rating: 3.5
Managed by Roz and Paul Willcocks. This is a basic caravan park in a lovely area. It has all the facilities needed without any frills. We paid $30 for a very large unpowered site. Roz is very friendly and was happy to accommodate requests. We extended our stay 3 times in a busy period and also had to charge our batteries. The grounds and gardens are beautifully maintained by Paul who is constantly working on keeping the place neat and tidy. He even chops the wood for the fire every day. The amenities are kept spotless. There is a large TV in the rec room and a library of books you can borrow or swap. There is lots of birdlife in the park and the occasional roo can be seen in the early morning. The chooks are always happy to see you especially if you have some treats for them. The park is dog friendly. In August the place was packed. Suggest that you call ahead to check if there are any vacancies. A number of vans were turned away as they had assumed there would be room for them. The park has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and many of the tourists were return visitors. We'll certainly be back.

Qld, Banana, Banana Hotel Motel and Caravan Park

Date of Stay: August 2013 Rating: 2
This park is located at the rear of the Banana Hotel & Motel, which is very nice, so the rather neglected caravan park at the rear comes as somewhat of a surprise. The amenities were the worst we had seen on our 3 months in Queensland. Although not dirty they were inadequate and very poorly maintained. A powered site is $30 and unpowered is $12. We decided to get an unpowered site and felt that $12 was value for money. The restaurant at the motel did a great meal. Noise from the highway was quite bad at times. We just wanted a drive through site for one night. For $12 we thought we did ok.

NSW, Narrabri, Big Sky Caravan Park

Date of Stay: August 2013 Rating: 3.5
This park provides lots of very large and easy to get into drive through sites. We paid $28 (2A powered site) as we got a Family Parks discount. The amenities were old but clean and the camp kitchen is rather basic. The park is a short walk from the RSL which has a lovely restaurant, as well as the usual snack bar meals. Reception is run very efficiently. We will definitely stay again.

Qld, Wonga Beach, Pinnacle Village Holiday Park

Date of Stay: July 2013 Rating: 4
A very well appointed park, right on the beach. There are sites to suit all sorts of rigs but some are a bit tight so let them know if you have a big rig. If you like a bit of space there are wonderful camp sites in a large sheltered area very close to the beach. You can choose your site in the unpowered area. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with two amenities blocks and a very nice pool area. An added touch was the peacocks that wandered through the park. This park is a destination and you can easily spend the day lazing around the pool or going for a long walk along the gorgeous beach. Quite expensive at $40 a night for a powered site for 2A. A very popular and busy park during peak season so call to check if there are any vacancies.

Qld, Mount Surprise, Undara Experience - Undara

Date of Stay: July 2013 Rating: 2
This park is really just a camp ground. We paid $24 for an unpowered site. Due to the popularity of the Lava Tubes the owners had recently cleared a few acres of bush to cope with the demand. There is no power or water in this newly cleared area and it is a dust bowl. People rarely stay for more than a night so the dust is constantly stirred up by the comings and goings of caravans and camper trailers. The newly built amenities block consists of 8 quite small ensuites. At 3pm I had the only cold shower of our 3 month trip in far north Queensland so clearly the hot water systems is inadequate, as 3pm is hardly peak time. Washing machines cheap here at only $1 per load! The powered sites are large and mostly drive through. An added touch is the fire place on each of these sites. The Lava Tubes are very interesting, the marked walks are worth doing. If you have a self-contained rig and don't need to use the amenities and you can get a powered site then you would probably be happy to stay here. The caravan parks in nearby Mount Surprise are much better value than Undara. Many visitors leave their rigs there and come out for the day to do the tours. That's what we'll be doing when we visit next time.
